What is counted on a web page
Only the text a visitor can read: scripts, styles, <noscript>, templates, SVG and elements hidden with the hidden attribute or display:none are left out. Navigation, footers and sidebars are included, because they are on the page; paste just the article text in the Text tab to count the article alone.
How it counts
- Words: runs of letters or digits in any alphabet; don't and state-of-the-art count as one word; Chinese and Japanese characters count one each.
- Sentences: split at . ! ? … and their CJK and Arabic forms, ignoring common abbreviations like Dr. and e.g.
- Reading time at 200 words per minute and speaking time at 130: both are estimates.
Frequently asked questions
How many words should a page have?
There's no minimum that guarantees rankings. Pages rank for covering what the searcher needs; for most topics that takes more than a few hundred words, for some (a calculator, a definition) far less.
Is my pasted text stored?
No. It's counted in memory and discarded.
